SHOT BY CHELDRICK WOODING (2018)
Born April 25, 1995, Thomas Brame, Jr (Phresh Kyd) seemed to have already been destined for greatness. It is told that he isn't supposed to even be here but through the grace of God he is. Due to this knowledge, Phresh always has his mind set on doing great things in his lifetime.
He was always a creative individual, starting out as an artist with pencil and paper. Everyone thought he would do something in animation or concept art until he found a new passion; music. It all started in the summer of 7th grade at a summer camp called Breakthrough Cincinnati. Phresh, at the time known as Dr. J, and two other friends wrote a rap for there annual end of summer celebration. The fact that everybody loved their performance pushed these three to start pursuing a career in hip hop. Going into 8th grade and going through different name changes, Phresh solidified himself when high school friend L.E.G., now known as $teven Cannon, invited him over to his bedroom studio and allowed Phresh to record his first song entitled "Talk Shit Now" over Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss". Cannon also helped him release his first mixtape Imma Alien in Spring 2009.
Throughout the years, Phresh would hone in on his craft of writing raps and eventually making beats, shooting videos, and doing cover art for himself and others. Once his parents got him his own studio set up, he learned how to mix and master to become a one man workforce so he wouldn't have to pay other people. Throughout his high school years at Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, he released a number of projects, including his first self produced project Please, Excuse My Steez in Spring 2013, graduation year. Although he did not get much acclaim in high school, he uses their doubts as fuel to do better. The only other artists from high school he is still in contact with is FlyGuy affiliates Mars the Shinobi and Khari Burton.
Now attending Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, Phresh Kyd has made major moves and is known greatly around campus. He started out as a radio personality on WTST the Blaze on The Chop Shop his freshman year and is now a producer for the show Untitled Radio. He uses this medium to not only be ready for a possible career, but also as a way to market his own music on the station and interact with other local names in the Nashville Hip Hop scene. Phresh Kyd gained major notice for his 8th project Lyrical Masterpiece released on April 25, 2014.
While on the rise on campus, Phresh Kyd met up with Wes Hood, C.E.O. of Pashun Music Branch, during an interview with The Chop Shop. Wes noticed his drive to make it big and really vibed with the music Phresh Kyd was creating. After that interview, Wes gave him a slot in the newly created "Braggin' Rights Showcase Monthly Series." It wasn't until the third showcase when Phresh Kyd became under the Pashun Music Branch umbrella and merging it with his brand, Kydluminati.
While still focusing on music, Phresh Kyd was also active on campus and in his schoolwork. He has been on the Dean's List all semester's he has been at Tennessee State University. He graduated with a degree in Mass Communications with a focus in Film/Television May 2017. He was inducted into the Honor's College. He is also a member of The Collegiate 100 being inducted with Bond 9 and was an E-Board member as the Communications Chair.
Phresh Kyd is not just a rapper, but an artist in every sense of the word. He is always on the move to do something with his music and that's what people like about him. Phresh Kyd will not stop until he is at a level where everyone will know his name whether it is in his lyricism/voice, instrumentation/composing, or visual art.
